An Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) (also often called Acute Admissions Unit or Acute Medical Assessment Unit) is a ward featured on Holby City. AAU deals with surgical admissions patients as referred on from the Emergency Department ready to be transferred to surgical wards. The ward is usually used in major incidents where the ED has reached capacity.
AAU contains a number of bays usually containing six beds of patients, the AAU also has a side room. There is also a consultant's office and another ward office by the entrance for the ward. There is also an operating theatre used for emergency surgical procedures. The department was expanded in 2016 with a Trauma Unit, lead by Bernie Wolfe, the Trauma Unit got closed down in series 19 episode 44 due to being too expensive for the hospital which also lead to the resignation of Wolfe.
